For the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust Rod worked in a senior capacity during a period of transition for the Trust when its financial risk rating had fallen below satisfactory. Initially hired in an interim capacity supporting the Finance Director in reshaping the Finance Function, Rod Morgan stepped into the role of Deputy and Acting FD to cover subsequent gaps at that level, and then continued the development of that department, including by the Masterclass programme and the coaching of his senior team and in-house successor.

Major areas of work included:

  • Overhauling the Trust’s financial performance reporting and presenting results to Management Committee, Finance Committee and the Board 
  • Overseeing the monthly reporting of the Trust’s financial position to Monitor and responding to queries arising whilst the Trust recovered from FRR 2 to 3
  • Negotiating and securing external finance for development of new ward capacity, and the Private Patients facility in central London
  • Managing the Trust’s short term cash position through negotiating the first drawdown from its working capital facility, and maintaining the confidence of senior management, NEDs and Monitor
     
  • Developing the capacity and capability of the senior management of the finance department across their  functional areas of responsibility
  • Promoting and developing a series of Masterclasses for Finance and non-Finance staff on financial/contractual/clinical areas of common interest, and encouraging and supporting presentations from participants less comfortable with speaking to large groups 
  • Sponsoring an informal group to identify areas for making process improvements in the creation and presentation financial information with basic tools such as excel
